How to Play: Daily Calcudoku

🎯 The Golden Rule

Fill the grid so that every row and column contains exactly one of each digit (1-4 for a 4x4 grid, 1-6 for 6x6, etc). It combines the "no-repeat" logic of Sudoku with basic arithmetic!

🕹️ How to Play (Controls)

  • Select & Place: Click or tap an empty cell, then select a number from the keypad below or your keyboard.
  • Notes (Pencil Mode): Toggle the Pencil icon (✎) to jot down multiple possible numbers for a cell.
  • Mistake Limit: You have a 3-mistake limit per game. Use Undo (↶) or Erase (⌫) to fix errors.

📜 The Math "Cages"

  • The Target: The heavily outlined blocks are "cages." The top-left corner shows a target number and a math operator (+, -, ×, ÷).
  • Do the Math: The numbers inside the cage must combine using that operator to reach the target.
  • Order Doesn't Matter: For subtraction and division, placement order doesn't matter. (e.g., a 2-cell "3-" cage can be 5 and 2, or 2 and 5).
  • ⚠️ The Crucial Rule: Numbers can repeat inside a single cage (like an L-shaped cage), as long as they don't break the Sudoku row/column rule!

🧠 Step-by-Step Starter Strategy

  1. Step 1: Grab the Freebies. Look for single-cell cages with just a number and no math operator. Fill these in immediately!
  2. Step 2: Find Unique Math. Look for cages with only one possible mathematical combination. For example, in a 4x4 grid, a 2-cell "3+" cage must be 1 and 2.
  3. Step 3: Cross-Reference. Use Sudoku logic. If a cage requires a 4, but that column already has a 4 elsewhere, you instantly know where your 4 must go!

Mastering Calcudoku

What is Calcudoku (Mathdoku)?
Calcudoku is a logic-based math puzzle. While it shares the "no-repeat" rule of Sudoku, it introduces "cages" with mathematical operators (+, -, ×, ÷). You must use basic arithmetic to reach the target number shown in each cage.
Is Calcudoku the same as KenKen®?
Yes, the gameplay is identical. KenKen® is the trademarked name. Calcudoku is the widely accepted open-source name for this brain-training format, often referred to as Math Sudoku.
Can numbers repeat in a cage?
Crucial Rule: A number can repeat within a single cage, but it can never repeat in the same row or column. This is the #1 strategy used to solve puzzles.
How do I solve subtraction and division cages?
For subtraction (-) and division (÷) cages, the order does not matter. If a 2-cell cage has a target of 3-, the numbers could be (5, 2) or (2, 5), as long as the difference is 3.
